Can a loss be noted
As beautiful?
Even I never knew it;
But here she lay,
Her shoulders coated
by silky hair,
And eyelids shut,
her lashes fanned out;
Can death really be
A beautiful thing?

Maybe for her, it is.
She sees her passing
Like no one else.
To her, it is an escape.
She prayed for suffering
to end –
It finally did.
She’s free from life on Earth,
Drifting among the clouds
like the angel
she is.

But to me, her death is sadder
The woman who birthed me,
Who took care of me:
My mother is gone
and my heart is left broken.

So I am left with one thought.
Should I remain saddened,
Since she is gone;
Or should I feel glad
That the woman is free?

I guess it’s dependent on perspective.
Read the poem before you read this :/ If you even read this at all.
So this is a poem we had to write for class.
My intent on it (this is why I want you to read it first - SPOILER ALERT oemgee) is that the person sees two sides to death - the mother lived the end of her life as torturous, and death is her only escape to freedom and happiness. But the protagonist feels very depressed since his/her mom is no longer alive.
I thought about this poem after thinking of two people very close to me who've died of cancer. I don't know if I should feel happy because their suffering is over, or depressed because they're no longer here on Earth.
Have you ever felt like this before for any reason?
